About
The only major Mayan site built right on the coast, with El Castillo standing on a limestone cliff above a turquoise cove where iguanas outnumber people most mornings. It was a walled trading port for maritime canoe traffic, not a capital, so the ruins are compact enough to see well in under two hours. Arrive at opening or after 3pm, the midday sun and the cruise ship crowds arrive together and neither is pleasant to share the path with.
