A quieter, shorter alternative to the full Sian Ka'an day tour, a shallow draft boat threading mangrove channels where herons, frigatebirds and, with real luck, a crocodile sunning on the bank turn up close enough for a decent photo without a zoom lens. The guide cuts the engine often, drifting through the narrower channels to keep the wildlife from scattering. Bring binoculars if a group member has them, the guide's pair only goes so far around.
